10 Tips to Keep Your Millennial Employees Happy
It’s never an easy job to please every employee especially when the office is being crowded by millennials. Most people think millennials are difficult to comprehend because of the generation gap but it’s not always the case. Here’s how to better understand what they need or what you can do to make them feel satisfied:
- Reward your employees.
A reward system is a great way to show someone how much you appreciate the work they’ve been putting in. Grab a cold one with them after a big project or simply order pizza!
- Spend time with your employees.
Get to know them. Know their likes and dislikes. Communication is key in every relationship, so why should you hold off from getting to know your employees? You hired them for a reason! Make them see more reasons for them to stay.
- Let the games begin.
Who says it all just has to be all work and no play? Reinvent the office and give it a fun vibe. Bring more color in the office by organizing events. It’s fun to be in a company that knows your worth and takes the time make their employees happy.
- Let your employees make important decisions on their own
It’s like when you first teach your kid how to ride the bike. Slowly, but surely, you let go of the bike’s stool until your kid learns how to ride all on their own. They may fall, they may get bruises, but each time they fall, it’ll help them learn and become the trailblazer they were meant to be on their bike.
It’s the same with your employees. Give them the opportunity to learn under your wing, and when the time comes, trust their own judgment on certain things and let them decide important decisions for you. There may be a couple of bumps along the way, but once they get the hang of it, it’ll be easier for both you and your employees. Give them the benefit of the doubt and help them grow into the decision-making person you sought them out to be.
- Ask for feedback.
Your employees should feel safe when they talk to you. They should never feel threatened to talk to you about a rising issue. Listen to them. Keep your ears and eyes open, and let them say what they must. After that, do something to put an end to that issue.
- Give credit where credit is due.
Motivate employees by commending a job well done. After a long day at work, a simple “Good job!” or any form of recognition will be much appreciated and motivate the team to work harder on the next project. Show the team how much of a great leader you are by uplifting their spirits.
- Offer flexible scheduling.
Some companies offer this precious opportunity to their employees. Basically, your employees can choose a certain schedule for them. Giving them an option is enough to show that you care about their well-being.
- Give time off.
Mark S. Valenti, president and CEO of The Sextant Group says:
“I think the most valuable way to recognize an employee today is through time —that is, time off, time to do something else besides work. It could be family, a hobby, or a charity, or a short vacation. I don’t think it needs to be routine or regular, and has the most value when it’s unexpected.”
- Everyone likes food.
Everyone likes food. But everyone loves free food even more. Give them a treat now and then, give them something to look forward to throughout the whimsical day in the office.
- Say thank you.
Thank you can go a long way. Show your employees that you are thankful for their presence, for their hard work in everything they do because the mundane cycle of office life, the pressure, the demands, and the deadlines — all of that have an impact on each and every employee your office has. Give them the satisfaction that you believe in what they do, what they’re capable of doing, and what they can offer to the world.
Treat them in simple or grand ways like a buffet, an office outing — something special to give them a load off from the workload. Learn to thank your employees, and they’ll do the same in their own special way. We promise.
