Diversity: How Differences Make a Difference in the Workplace

Most other countries would call the Philippines a hotpot. We’re a people so diverse, we grew up owning both local and borrowed culture. As a people, we’ve learned to live in harmony with such diversity that even single households may hold different native ethnicities and international blood. However, we can learn a thing or two about embracing diversity in the workplace and find out what difference it might bring.

Embracing Differences

In today’s globalized and interconnected world, diversity in the workplace goes beyond mere buzzwords. It encompasses a wide range of attributes, including race, ethnicity, gender expression, disability, age, sexual orientation, and more. When businesses embrace these differences, they open doors to unique perspectives, experiences, and ideas. Especially in a county like the Philippines, different people with different backgrounds have different ways of solving problems; these differences are diamonds in the rough that could be business breakthroughs waiting to be uncovered.

Attracting Top Talent

A diverse and inclusive workplace is a magnet for top talent. The most talented applicants often look for a company that values diversity. Because Filipinos are very individualistic, potential employees are seeking companies that reflect their values and provide equal opportunities for growth even if an applicant regards themself as “different”. By actively promoting diversity in your recruitment efforts, you position your company as an inclusive employer, attracting a broader pool of candidates with diverse skill sets and backgrounds.

Enhancing Creativity and Innovation

Imagine a team where everyone thinks the same, comes from similar backgrounds, and possesses identical skill sets. While it may seem harmonious at first, it can lead to a stagnant and uninspiring work environment. On the other hand, a diverse workforce brings together different perspectives, experiences, and ways of thinking. These varying viewpoints spark creativity and innovation, as team members contribute unique insights and approaches to problem-solving. By encouraging diversity, you foster an environment where new ideas flourish and your company can stay ahead of the competition.

Improving Decision-Making

When decision-making processes include diverse voices, the outcomes are more robust, comprehensive, and needless to say, inclusive. By incorporating perspectives from different individuals, management can gain a broader understanding of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. This diversity of thought allows for more well-rounded decisions that take into account a wider range of considerations, leading to more successful outcomes.

Enhancing Employee Engagement and Retention

Inclusive workplaces that celebrate diversity cultivate a sense of belonging among employees. When individuals feel valued and respected for who they are, they become more engaged and motivated to contribute their best. They might even go the extra mile and be micro-ambassadors of the company just from having a strong sense of belonging. This boosts productivity, employee satisfaction, and consequently business growth. Employees are also more likely to stay with a company that values their unique contributions and provides equal opportunities for growth and advancement.

Diversity is not just a box to be checked, but a powerful catalyst for business success. In the Philippines, where diversity is deeply ingrained in the household, the streets, and international image, embracing differences becomes even more crucial. By promoting diversity and inclusivity, companies will be able to make a difference and see a difference when they embrace differences.
